CHAPTER 1 TECHNICAL REFERENCE
MODULE OVERVIEW
Purpose The high throughput conveyor is a combined manual/programmable width
conveyor system which sets the rail width and transports boards through a
machine using belts. The system can accommodate up to three boards in a
machine at one time, thereby reducing the machine cycle time. The system can
be configured to run either from left to right or right to left.
Elements The main components of the high throughput conveyor are as follows:
• Fixed Front Rail (2 Auxiliary Conveyors/Rails and a Print Station or Centre
Rail)
• Moving Rear Rail (2 Auxiliary Conveyors/Rails and a Print Station or
Centre Rail)
• Board Transport Belts (6 positions)
• Board Transport Belt Motors (6 positions)
• Moving Rail Drive Motor (Print Station only)
• Sensors (7 positions)
• Conveyor Board Stops (3 positions)
• Board Clamps
• Foil-Less Clamps (optional)
• Board Snuggers (optional)
Operation The high throughput conveyor system transports the board from the upline
machine using belts from the upline auxiliary conveyor, into the print station of
the machine, where the board is positioned, clamped and printed. After printing
the board is transferred to the downline machine using belts from the downline
auxiliary conveyor. As the system can be configured to either run left to right or
right to left, each of the auxiliary conveyors are configurable to either run as
upline or downline conveyors, with respect to the print station.
There are four modes of operation:
• Single Stage Fast Mode
• Single Stage Normal Mode
• Three Stage Fast Mode
• Three Stage Normal Mode
In single stage normal/fast mode the auxiliary rails and the print station rail are
configured as one single rail. In normal mode only, a single board can be
accommodated in the machine. In the fast mode, two boards can be accom-
modated, one entering the machine whilst the printed board is exiting the
machine. The maximum board length is 508mm in single stage mode.
In three stage mode, up to three boards can be in the machine at one time
decreasing the print cycle time therefore, increasing the throughput of the
machine. In the event of a downline machine delay, the machine can have two
boards printed and waiting for the downline machine. One board held on the

downline conveyor and one held on the print station. The maximum board
length is 370mm in three stage mode.
NOTE
Refer to the Sequences section of this chapter for more details of the single and
three stage operation in normal and fast modes.
