Disposal of linear motors
NOTICE
Since extremely powerful magnets are used in the linear motors, disposing of them
as they are is extremely dangerous. Before disposal, be sure to heat them at high
temperature (300°C or over) for more than an hour to demagnetize them.
This machine uses linear motors for driving along its X- and Y-axes.
The linear motors include movers and stators. Since extremely powerful permanent magnets are
used in the stators, wrong handling can be extremely dangerous even if the power supply is in
the OFF (O) state.
Since the permanent magnets in the stators need to be demagnetized before disposal, entrust
the waste disposer with the disposal with these instructions. (Except for the Z-axis linear motor)
Some waste disposers may not handle the disposal of linear motors because of the issue of
workability.

Keeping in mind the following matters, dispose the linear motors safely.
1. Points to remember in disposal/disassembly of linear motors
It is extremely dangerous to dispose/disassemble. See “Handling of linear motors” discussed
previously.
•
The workers who have the knowledge of linear motors should perform disposal work.
•
Use nonmagnetic tools for disposal work.
(When keeping 40 mm away from the magnets, you will not be affected by the magnetic force.)
Precautions
•
Stators and movers are stuck to each other; however, the movers have no magnetic force.
•
The force of attraction of stators (permanent magnets) is 10 kN. If stators are stuck to each
other, they cannot be detached. The same is true of thick steel sheets. Pinching your fingers
can cause injury.
Bringing large magnetic bodies, even if they are tools, near to stators can cause your fingers to
be pinched; therefore, use nonmagnetic tools.
•
Even tools and bolts are stuck as long as they are magnetic bodies. Unless they are stuck on
their surfaces, they may potentially be detached.
•
There is no problem if you touch the magnetic surfaces with your hands.
•
When handling a stator singly, be sure to cover its magnetic surface with a nonmagnetic body
in order not to be affected by its magnetic force.
2. How to disassemble the stators of linear motors safely
Common precautions
•
Do not remove movers before removing stators.
•
Before removing stators, secure the place around which no magnetic bodies exist.
•
When removing stators, fix nonmagnetic bodies (e.g. corrugated cardboard) measuring 40 mm
or more in thickness on their magnetic surfaces in order not to be affected by their magnetic
forces.
•
Also cover the magnetic surfaces of removed stators with nonmagnetic bodies.
Disassembling the stators of X-axis linear motor
•
Two sheets of stators are set on each X-axis beam.
•
By hand-moving the head against the stator to be removed, maximize the distance from the
X-axis mover.
•
Remove 16 bolts from each sheet of stator.
Disassembling the stators of Y-axis linear motor
•
As for the Y-axis stators, remove the lower ones first and then the upper ones. (If the uppe
r
stators are removed first, your fingers may be pinched between the upper and lower ones or
the stators may be stuck to each other too firmly to be detached.)
•
As for the Y-axis stators, four sheets of upper ones and four sheets of lower ones are set fo
r
each coarse of mover.
•
By hand-moving the X-axis against the stator to be removed, maximize the distance from the
Y-axis mover.
•
Remove 18 bolts from each sheet of stator.

3. How to demagnetize the stators of linear motors
1. Heat the stators with a burner for more than an hour so that their temperature will rise to
300°C–350°C.
2. After cooling them, measure their magnetic forces. Make sure that they are demagnetized (3 mT
or below).
After demagnetization, dispose of them as ordinary industrial wastes.
As for the movers, dispose of them as ordinary industrial wastes as they are.
