5. 1-year maintenance
This section describes 1-year maintenance items.
5.1 MU head
5.1.1 Cleaning the spline shaft
Foreign matter and dust adhering to the inside of the spline shaft air path may cause pickup and placement
errors. To prevent this, the spine shaft interior should be cleaned once per year (general guideline), although
this may vary depending on the supplied air condition and the operating time.
c
CAUTION
If abnormal noise is emitted from a spline shaft or movement is unstable, contact YAMAHA sales representatives.
Disassembly and cleaning of the spline shaft by the user will void the warranty.
1
Prepare for work.
e
1. Remove all items sensitive to magnetic fields such as wristwatches and magnetic ID cards.
2. Return all nozzles to the nozzle station (when installed).
3. Press the emergency stop button to put the machine in emergency stop.
4. Use the CLAMP ON/OFF switch to lower the feeder exchange carriage and detach it.
5. Move the head unit to a position where easy to perform the task, and place a square cloth under
the head unit.
2
Detach the nozzles.
Detach all nozzles manually (when not
equipped with a nozzle station).
n
NOTE
After cleaning, each nozzle must be returned to the
head from which it was detached.
3
Disconnect the air hoses.
Disconnect all air hoses from the bearing
holders at each head.

4
Prepare the cleaning kit.
Pour IPA (isopropyl alcohol) into the
container of the cleaning kit (KHN-M8860-
00X).

c
CAUTION
Do not use any solvent other than IPA (isopropyl
alcohol).

Remove the maintenance bolt.
1. Lower all heads and put a hex wrench (2)
through the hole shown in the figure at
right to keep the heads lowered.
2. Use a hex wrench (2.5) to remove the
maintenance bolts shown in the figure on
the right.

c
CAUTION
If a magnetized tool, etc. is in contact with the linear
scale, this may cause damage to the linear scale. So,
lower the head with great care.
6
Clean the inside of the spline shaft.
1. Place a paper cup or similar item under
the spline shaft to receive IPA.
2. Insert the nozzle of the cleaning kit into
the cleaning hole of the spline shaft.
3. Pour alcohol (IPA) into the spline shaft air
path to clean away dust and grime.
53363-N9-00
c
CAUTION
Be sure to insert the nozzle tip of the cleaning kit at least
15 mm into the spline shaft. If not inserted enough, IPA
might flow out on the packings at the top of the shaft of
the FL head and MU head.
7
Blow air into the spline air path.
1. Prepare an air blow tool (option) and
connect it to the air fitting on the feeder
exchange carriage.
2. Place a cloth against the end of the
spline shaft, then air-blow the spline shaft
interior with the air blow tool.
3. When the cloth placed against the spline
shaft end is no longer being soiled by the
exiting air, screw the maintenance bolt in
again.

c
CAUTION
The exhaust air blow might strike your face, so be sure
to wear safety goggles.
8
Repeat the cleaning procedure.
Repeat steps 5 to 7 to clean the inside of
the spline shafts of all heads.
9
Return air hose and nozzle back to
their original positions.
n
NOTE
Return each nozzle to the head from which it was
detached.
