Change operating mode
This menu option can be used to change the user mode of the LC user interface (see section 3.1.1).
The following operating modes can be selected from:
1) Programming
programming mode
2) Controlling
control mode

OPTIONS

Change operating mode

The UNIX window "DESK-Configuration" opens.
●
Enter the root password at the cursor position and then press the RETURN key.
The window contains a listing of the operating modes that can be selected. Every operating mode
is identified by a number.
●
At the cursor position, enter the number (1 or 2) that corresponds to the desired operating mode,
or abort the procedure by entering the number 3.
●
Press the RETURN key twice.
The UNIX window closes.
●
Terminate the line computer session by means of
LC-End
.
●
Restart the line computer session by means of
LC-Start
.
Following the start, the desktop is displayed in the selected operating mode (user mode)
(see Fig. 3.1.1 and Fig. 3.1.2).

Install options
This menu option allows the files of software options (e.g. "Barcode mode") to be read in from diskette
and to be installed on the hard disk.

A UNIX window opens.
●
Insert the diskette containing the files of the software option into the floppy disk drive.
●
Press the RETURN key twice.
The software option is installed on the hard disk.
●
After the installation has been completed successfully, press the RETURN key.
The UNIX window closes.
●
Remove the diskette from the disk drive and
●
terminate the line computer session using
LC-End
.
●
Using
LC-Start
restart the line computer session.
After the start, the new software option is ready for use.

Changing network connection
The menu options described in the following can be used to enter or change network parameters.

All functions concerning the network of the computer system may be performed only by persons having a
profound knowledge about networks and how they are configured.

Change system name
This menu option allows you to change the system name of the line computer.

Click on OPTIONS --> Change system name.
The UNIX window "Change system node name" opens.
●
Enter the root password at the cursor position and then press the RETURN key.
●
Respond to the query as to whether the current name is to be really changed with
y
and confirm
by pressing RETURN.
●
When the next query appears, enter the new system name and confirm with RETURN.

NOTE
Acceptable is an alpha-numeric name comprising max. eight characters without any blanks and spe-
cial characters (e.g. aut95289).
●
The query about the correctness of the name is to be answered with
y
and confirmed with RETURN.
The new name is stored in the system and the operating system is relinked.
●
Respond to the two queries that are now displayed with
y
and press RETURN in each case.
●
When the line "Hit <RETURN> to continue" is displayed, press the RETURN key.
The UNIX window closes.
●
The computer system is to be shut down using the Shutdown main menu function and subse-
quently to be rebooted. The line computer system is started with the new name.

Change network settings
A Pentium-based computer may contain one or two LAN cards. One of them is always provided for the
communication with computers on the customer network. The settings for this LAN card can be
changed. When so doing, the old value is displayed, the new value is entered and a query asking for the
correctness of the entry is displayed until the operator responds to the same by selecting
y
and confirm-
ing by pressing RETURN.

Click on OPTIONS --> Change network settings.
The UNIX window "Change network settings" opens.
●
Enter the root password at the cursor position and then press the RETURN key.
The current network settings are displayed (IP address, Netmask, Broadcast, Domain name).
●
Respond to the query as to whether some of the values are to be changed with
y
and confirm by
pressing RETURN.
●
Change the IP-address or accept the preset value by pressing RETURN.
●
Respond to the query about the correctness of the address with
y
and confirm by pressing RETURN.
●
Change the Netmask or accept the preset value by pressing RETURN.
●
Confirm the correctness of the Netmask with
y
and by pressing RETURN.

Change the Broadcast address or accept the preset value by pressing RETURN.

Confirm the correctness of the address with

Change the Domain name or accept the preset value by pressing RETURN.

Confirm the correctness of the name with

The data are accepted and the UNIX window closes.

The computer system is to be shut down using the

Log-on of external computers
With this menu option it is possible to log external computers of the customer’s network onto the com-
puter system. These so-called external computers may be other line computers or the customer’s host
computers.

The UNIX window "Change hosts & automount configuration" opens.
●
Enter the root password at the cursor position and then press the RETURN key.
●
Respond to the query as to whether changes are to be made with

and confirm by pressing RETURN.

Enter the Host name (name of the external computer) and confirm by pressing RETURN.
●
Respond to the following query as to whether the name is correct with
y
and confirm by pressing
RETURN.
●
Enter the IP-address and confirm by pressing RETURN.
●
Confirm the correctness of the address with
y
and by pressing RETURN.
●
Respond to the query as to whether an NFS connection is to be established with
y
or
n
and con-
firm by pressing RETURN.
If

enter the Mount path and confirm with
y
and by pressing RETURN.

Confirm the correctness of the Mount path with

and by pressing RETURN.

Respond to the query as to whether any additional changes are to be performed with

firm by pressing RETURN. The UNIX window closes.

Change network configuration
This menu option is used to directly start the ‘netconfig’ program for the configuration of the network.
The selection of this option therefore requires that special caution be exercised. Prior to starting the
program the operator should be knowledgeable about which options must be selected for a correct
configuration.
Primarily, the ’netconfig’ program for the configuration of the LAN connection (output of the LAN card)
is used.
