MACHINE SAFETY FEATURES
Introduction This Chapter describes the various safety features that are incorporated into the
machine to provide a safe operating and maintenance environment, the Electro-
static Discharge (ESD) precautions to be taken during SSD handling and the
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) standards that are designed into the
machine.
Warning and
Caution Notices
Black-on-Yellow WARNING, CAUTION and DANGER labels are placed on
the printing machine and notices are posted throughout the associated documen-
tation to alert the operator/maintainer to possible hazards which may cause
physical injury or equipment damage.
WARNING notices draw the attention of operators/maintainers to possible
general or functional hazards which may cause loss of life, serious injury or ill
health. These hazards are either inherent in the machine or arise during the
operation/implementation of procedures.
CAUTION notices alert personnel to the possibility of damage occurring to the
machine material which is likely to arise following the departure from laid-down
procedures. A caution notice does not imply danger to personnel.
An example of the format for each notice is shown below :
CAUTION
ANTI-STATIC HANDLING. Standard precautions must be adhered to
when handling electronic cards and configuring and inserting into the
enclosures.
WARNING
LETHAL VOLTAGE. DANGEROUS VOLTAGES EXIST IN THIS
EQUIPMENT. ENSURE ALL ELECTRONIC COVERS AND MAIN
MACHINE COVERS ARE FITTED BEFORE OPERATING THIS
EQUIPMENT.
General DEK printing machines incorporate safety features that provide a safe operating
environment for the operator and the machine.
E Stops Each machine is fitted with two emergency shutdown press-buttons (E Stops)
located within easy reach of the operator. Operation of either E Stop initiates
suspension of machine operation. External modules may be fitted to the
machine which facilitate connection to a common cable loop shared with each
machine in a production line. Operation of any single emergency switch within
the loop causes automatic suspension of operation of those machines connected
to the loop.
Covers The shutter and drop down panel, are fitted with cam safety switches to protect
personnel from moving equipment.
Perspex side safety covers are fitted to the machine sides to protect personnel
from inadvertent access to the machine around the board entry/exit areas.

SAFETY FEATURES
EXTERNAL EMERGENCY STOP LOOP
2.2 Installation Manual Chapter Issue 3 Jun 01
EXTERNAL EMERGENCY STOP LOOP
The external emergency stop system comprises of a low voltage powered loop
linked between selected machines in the production line. Operation of any E-
Stop button within the loop breaks its continuity and subsequently initiates
immediate suspension of operation of all machines within this link.
NOTE
The external loop emergency stop is a machine option.
Recovery When normal working conditions are restored, release the emergency stop
button and, when prompted by a screen message, press the machine system
button.

SAFETY FEATURES
PRINTHEAD COVERS
Chapter Issue 3 Jun 01 Installation Manual 2.3
PRINTHEAD COVERS
Access to the machine printhead is achieved by raising the shutter at the front of
the machine.
Access to the stencil and optional under screen cleaner is achieved by lowering
the drop down panel at the front of the machine.
NOTE
The drop down panel can only be lowered if the shutter has been raised. The
drop down panel must also be raised prior to closing the shutter.
The shutter and drop down panel, are fitted with cam safety switches to protect
personnel from the moving mechanisms during normal line operations, opening
either cover cuts power to all motors and selected actuators, via the PNOZ
system safety relay module, to all machine modules.
Perspex side safety covers are fitted to the machine sides to protect personnel
from inadvertent access to the machine around the board entry/exit areas.
Recovery When the covers are closed, normal working condition is restored and the line
may be restarted. Pressing one of the two machine system buttons enables
resumption of operations, where this is allowed by the control system.
