3. Troubleshooting
Note : This section covers the WC type feeder.
In general, feeders which require maintenance are those with low pick-up ratios, or
which cause high machine stop ratios.
The causes of these problems can be grouped into three major categories :
A Excessive top film take-up errors
B Excessive parts tape feed errors
C Low pick-up ratio, but not accompanied by the above
3.1 Inspection Items and Methods
A Excessive top film take-up errors
A-1 Is the top film set correctly?
Refer to section 1.4 “Loading W8, W12 mm Feeders” through 1.6 “Loading W32
Paper Feeder” of this chapter, and check that the top film is correctly set.
A-2 Is the top film take-up reel cover tight?
Weak on the cover lock can make it difficult for the lock to hold. In this case,
replace the top film take-up reel cover.
If the problems remains after replacement, then wear on the shaft-side reel lock is
probably the cause. Replace the top film take-up reel entirely. Note that the shaft-
side reel cannot be purchased alone.
A-3 Is the tape leaf slit clean?
If there is any material caught in the tape leaf, clean it with an air gun. Be sure to
clean the tape leaf every time the parts reel is changed.

A-4 Is the top film take-up reel reverse torque as specified?
Reverse torque 1.0 kgf minimum
Forward torque 0.07 kgf maximum
Measure the above torques with a push-pull gauge, and replace the top film take-
up reel if they are not within specification.
Refer to section 2.2 “Film Take-up Reel Reverse Torque Check” of Chapter 2 of this
part for details on measurement.
A-5 Is the take-up lever tracking the feed lever?
If the take-up lever tracking is not operating normally, the take-up lever will
collide with the aluminum bracket or take-up reel. In this case, replace the take-up
reel.
This can be caused by deformation of the aluminum bracket, in which case the
bracket should be replaced (see B-3).

A-6 Try replacing the take-up spring
If you suspect the top film take-up (peeling force) is weak, replace the take-up
spring. The spring force should be selected from the table below. Springs are only
available for the W8 mm tape feeder.

B Excessive parts tape feed errors
B-1 Does the part’s tape feed pitch match the feeder specification?
Check whether the part’s tape feed pitch matches the feeder specification.
B-2 Is the rotation torque of the reel in the holder within specification?
(for W8 mm tape 13-inch parts reels)
Set the rotation torque measurement reel into the reel holder and measure the
rotation torque with a push-pull gauge.
For 200 mm/s, the maximum starting torque should be 0.5kgf.
Note : The rotation torque measurement reel is a dummy reel made with the following
maximum values :
Reel center width 14.0 mm x 100 mm diameter
Reel peripheral width 13.1 mm
Weight 740 g
