benefi t both parties“
The Challenge
Product recalls are very expen-
sive for manufacturers - there-
fore it is self-explanatory that
they ask for a traceability without
gaps. SIPLACE gave bebro the
chance to test improved Trace-
ability functionalities for reading
barcodes on individual PCBs
in their plant. “Customers are
sometimes sceptical when we
propose a fi eld test. They fear
that the test and the presence
of the SIPLACE team might
interfere with or slow down their
regular production operations,”
says Bernd Pfeiffer, who heads
fi eld testing in SIPLACE’s supply
chain management department.
At bebro the SIPLACE team
went on to prove that fi eld tests
can be performed quickly and
without hold-ups.

The SIPLACE Solution
The most important factors for a
successful test during a running
production are perfectly coordi-
nated schedule and close co-
operation between the SIPLACE
factory and the fi eld test cen-
tral control. But communication
with the customer is important
as well. As the SIPLACE Team
is well familiar with customers‘
processes in production, the
installation of the new software
only took a few hours.
“Particularly for our high-mix
locations, where we specialize
in producing prototypes for our
customers, this fi eld test pro-
duced some very valuable
solutions,“ summarizes Hagen-
maier, head of production with
bebro.

“Our SIPLACE partner
Alexander Burgi had told us
about the improved traceability
functionalities with barcodes
on the individual PCBs and the
ability to check these features
in a fi eld test in our plant,“ said
Matthias Hagenmaier, produc-
tion manager at bebro’s Fricken-
hausen factory. “We immediately
said yes, because it was an
excellent opportunity for us to try
out the new features two months
before their offi cial introduction.”
With Version 3.5 of SIPLACE
Traceability, bebro now has an
even better overview of which
components were placed on
which boards, because the bar-
code is now being read by the
fi rst station of the line.
The barcodes are not applied
in a separate step prior to the
placement process, but placed
like a component directly by the
machine. And reading the indivi-
dual barcodes on the fi rst ma-
chine simplifi es the component
tracing to individual PCBs and
reduces the overall range – an
important benefi t in a production
environment with highest fl exibi-
lity. During the fi eld test, appro-
ximately 10,000 barcodes were
read on 5,000 circuit boards
without any problems.
Flexibility in production
During the fi eld test a new
changeover concept was intro-
duced – SIPLACE Random
Setup – that improves the effi -
ciency of production. To satisfy
the different requirements of all
its customers a high measure
of versatility is necessary in the
bebro production. This causes
frequent changeovers on the
line.
Matthias Hagenmaier explains:
“We basically spent more time
changing setups than actually
producing. We had to change
that.”
A very attractive option for this
problem is SIPLACE Random
Setup: with it, component
feeders can be installed directly
during production. Moreover the
SIPLACE SX machines recog-
nize immediately which compo-
nents are located where,
because feeders were kitted with
their components respective via
SIPLACE Setup Center and bar-
code scanners in the preparation
area.
In this way the preparation of a
new product and changeover of
production is possible nonstop.
An entirely positive
experience
“Particularly for our high-mix
locations, where we specialize
in prototypes for our customers,
this fi eld test produced some
very valuable solutions,“ says
Hagenmaier.
Bernd Pfeiffer is equally happy:
“Our fi eld tests show that we

During an eight week fi eld test a bebro project team tested new SIPLACE software features at
their own site and infl uenced their further development.
