Kimball Electronics Group and SIPLACE
SIPLACE SX increases speed
of high-mix production
The challenge
Facing smaller lot sizes, more orders, a
rising number of product changeovers
and higher demands on placement
accuracy due to, for example, the
rising popularity of 01005 components,
Kimball Electronics decided to add pro-
duction capacity. The new investment
was supposed to meet the following
objectives: provide a solid foundation
for continued growth, accelerate the NPI
process, and be able to handle small
lot sizes with  exibility and ef ciency.
Kimball Electronics started evaluating
solutions form various equipment manu-
facturers in June 2009. Because of the
company’s quality obligations to its cus-
tomers, this process is highly structured
at Kimball Electronics.
The SIPLACE solution
Kimball Electronics concluded its
evaluation phase in May 2010 with the
decision to purchase a new SIPLACE
SX line consisting of two dual-gantry
SIPLACE SX2 machines – each equip-
ped with two highly  exible SIPLACE
MultiStar heads – and a single-gantry
SIPLACE SX1. The latter is equipped
with a SIPLACE TwinHead for the end-
of-line placement of large components,
connectors and odd-shapes.
Kimball Electronics Group
Founded in 1961 as a supplier for the
Kimball International Group, the compa-
ny focuses since the late 1980s on con-
tract manufacturing for demanding cus-
tomers. At its plant in Tampa, Florida,
Kimball Electronics Group manufactures
complex modules for customers in the
medical technology, industrial technolo-
gy and security industries. The average
lot size is 200 units with a range from 10
to about 1,000 units per job. Most pro-
ducts are populated on both sides with
up to 2,000 components per side. Many
of the components are complex BGAs,
MicroBGAs and CSPs, and many of the
products go into critical applications.
Accordingly, the customers’ quality
requirements are very high.
“We were impressed by the quality of the sales support and the
concept of the new SIPLACE SX, and the speedy commissioning
of the new line showed us once again why the SIPLACE team is
considered the leader in the industry also in terms of customer
service.” Anh Nguyen, Kimball Electronics

Kimball’s Tampa plant has predomi-
nantly used SIPLACE equipment since
1994. The company currently operates
three SIPLACE lines. When the number
of orders and product changeovers
kept rising while lot sizes continued to
drop, Kimball’s management had to give
some thought about expanding their
production capabilities. Customers also
became more demanding with respect
to placement accuracy, for example by
asking for more high-volume capacity
to place 01005 components. A new
line was supposed to accelerate new
product introductions signicantly and
improve the exibility and efciency of
small-lot production.
SIPLACE CPP MultiStar head and an
effective placement program
The management of Kimball Electronics
was particularly impressed by the
SIPLACE CPP MultiStar placement
head. Thanks to its unique technolo-
gy, the SIPLACE MultiStar can switch
on-the-y from the fast Collect & Place
mode to the exible Pick & Place mode
and even to an extremely efcient
mixed mode. “We process a very wide
spectrum of components with rapidly
shrinking lot sizes. This is where the
SIPLACE MultiStar placement head
really shows its strengths. Instead of
having to deal with cumbersome head
changeovers and line recongurations,
we now operate with a placement head
that is nearly as exible as our produc-
tion. And since the placement program
adapts accordingly, our line is always
perfectly balanced – even after pro-
duct changeovers,” says Anh Nguyen
about his experience with the SIPLACE
MultiStar.
Fortunately, all this exibility does not
come at the expense of placement
accuracy. For example, 01005 com-
ponents can be placed with the same
speed as other components, which
makes them suitable for high-volume
production. The capabilities of this
innovative placement head are en-
hanced further by the high throughput
per square foot of the SIPLACE SX
platform.
Kimball Electronics added a SIPLACE
SX line with two dual-gantry SIPLACE
SX2 machines – each equipped with
two highly exible SIPLACE MultiStar
placement heads – and a single-gantry
SIPLACE SX1. The SIPLACE SX1 is
equipped with a SIPLACE TwinHead for
the end-of-line placement of large com-
ponents, connectors and odd-shapes.
Faster NPI processes
The SIPLACE SX also played out its
strengths with regards to new produc-
tion introductions (NPI) and software
features. With the Virtual Product
Build feature in the SIPLACE Pro line
software, camera images of prototypes
can be used for the quick and error-free
creation of placement programs. Thanks
to the advanced software, Kimball Elec-
tronics was able to signicantly increase
its production quality for new product
introductions. The company realized
additional efciency improvements from
improved setup concepts, the formation
of setup-optimized product families and
the coordinated top/bottom placement.
Kimball Electronics Group und SIPLACE:
The SIPLACE SX scored especially high in the categories of new product
introductions and software features.
A SIPLACE SX line is the ideal solution for the exible and efci-
ent production of small lot sizes.
