SEW Eurodrive and SIPLACE
An Innovative Setup Concept for
Non-Stop Production
The Challenge
At SEW Eurodrive fl exibility and quick
delivery is more than a critical competi-
tive factor - it belongs to the company‘s
philosophy in the service area.
The goal: shipping customer-specifi c
products only two hours after receiving
the job order. The production centers let
the SMT production department know
whenever they have run out of a certain
type of module. In response, the depart-
ment produces a little under 600 product
variants in runs of up to 200 units. The
only way to churn out that many small
lots without having to stop the line is by
eliminating any confi guration and head
changes. For us in the automatic place-
ment part of the factory, this means
being able to produce a module in the
morning and shipping it to the customer
the same evening as part of a complete
product,” explains Bernhard Kirchgäss-
ner, SMT production head.
The SIPLACE Solution
To be able to change setups quickly and
reliably, the SEW Eurodrive people and
the SIPLACE team have come up with
a special concept. “One side of the
line is permanently set up with stan-
dard components. Here we only have
to refi ll the feeders, but never change
them. On the other side, however, we
use SIPLACE software to implement
their Random Setup, which allows the
operators to place feeders and compo-
nents for the next product anywhere on
the line. What makes this possible is
the intelligent SIPLACE software with
which you can map and control such
special setup concepts,” explains Timo
Heil, SEW Eurodrive’s project manager.
The result: “One single operator is all it
takes to keep the line running non-stop.
Switching from product A to product B
takes only a few seconds.”
SEW Eurodrive
SEW Eurodrive is one of the world’s
leading drive technology specialists
with a sales exceeding of 2.6 billion
euros. The company operates 15 plants
around the globe. Quality and price are
not the only benefi ts for the company’s
customers. These days, fl exibility and
quick delivery have also become critical
factors in a tough market. At SEW
Eurodrive, electronics already account
for 10 to 11 percent of total sales. The
company’s electronics production is
concentrated in its state-of-the-art plant
in Bruchsal, Germany.
“The project team of ASM Assembly Systems adopted this principle and
designed the new line to satisfy our wish for non-stop and production on de-
mand. It is amazing what you can achieve with a fl exible placement platform
today.” SMT production head Bernhard Kirchgässner

“We managed to cut the time from receiving
an order to getting it ready for shipment to
as little as two hours. Even larger runs and
customer-specifi c products don’t take more
than one day. For us, this means being able
to produce a module in the morning and
shipping it to the customer the same evening
as part of a complete product,” explains
Bernhard Kirchgässner, head of SMT
placement at SEW Eurodrive.
To achieve this kind of performance, the SMT
portion of the company’s electronics produc-
tion runs in three shifts to churn out customer
orders in small lot sizes. SMT Eurodrive
operates a total of fi ve SMT lines. “Employ-
ing state-of-the-art technology and focusing
on quality are part of our philosophy. Our
electronics production uses SIPLACE
machines exclusively,” adds Kirchgäßner.
SMT Line 5: Maximum fl exibility
SEW Eurodrive installed its latest line in
2012; it consists of four SIPLACE SX1
machines. Together with a team SIPLACE
specialists, SEW Eurodrive implemented
several process and software innovation in
order to maximize the line’s fl exibility produc-
tivity via non-stop setup changeovers.
In addition to the SX platforms, SIPLACE’s
MultiStar placement heads provide the
hardware basis for this concept. Controlled
via software, the heads can switch in each
cycle between the fast collect-and-place
mode, the fl exible pick-and-place mode and
a third mixed mode. That way, the new line
is able to place components ranging in size
from 0402 to 11 cm with no head or confi gu-
ration changes.
Changeover on one side of the line only
SEW Eurodrive manufactures its electronics
modules using the Kanban pull principle.
The SMT department produces a little under
600 product variants in runs of up to 200
units. The only way to churn out that many
small lots without having to stop the line is by
eliminating any confi guration and head chan-
ges. Unique technologies like the SIPLACE
MultiStar and fl exible SIPLACE software
modules execute such fl oating changeovers
from one product to the next faster than any
other equipment.
Why empty the line?
Another special feature is the use of the
SIPLACE Product Change Controller
software in combination with stationwise
placement program changeovers. SIPLACE
software specialist Michael Fettig explains:
“We also integrated the Asys master com-
puter. It initiates product changeovers fully
automatically. It makes not only the required
track width adjustments, but changes all
other machine parameters as needed.”
The result: While the end of the line
continues to work on a product, the front is
already busy on the next one. This approach
permits SEW Eurodrive to eliminate the idle
time which used to bring the entire line to a
halt during product changeovers – even if
the new product requires a track width
adjustment.
No sagging boards allowed – thanks to
SIPLACE Smart Pin Support
Larger boards frequently require support pins
that prevent them from sagging during the
placement process. SEW Eurodrive uses
the SIPLACE Smart Pin Support system.
The positions of the support pins are simply
defi ned as part of the placement program.
The pin picker picks the support pins from
a magazine and places them in their predefi -
ned positions on the lift table. The advantage
for SEW Eurodrive: Automating the support
pin placement process makes non-stop
product changeovers possible even when
extra-large boards enter the line.
SEW Eurodrive and SIPLACE
With the SIPLACE SX1 and its innovative line concept, SEW has found the ideal solution for non-
stop setup changeovers.
