SIPLACE SX
for high-mix production of
small lots and prototypes
The Challenge
Paul E. Danchell A/S specializes in
the high-quality production of complex
circuit boards. Its customer segment
is characterized by increasing product
diversity and rapidly declining lot sizes
and lead times. Its customers want their
electronics production to be perfectly
synchronized with the manufacture of
their end products in terms of time and
volume. This requires steady impro-
vements of the coordination with the
customer as well as an operational
infrastructure that permits the highly
ef cient production of small lots.
The SIPLACE Solution
Paul E. Danchell A/S has already been
able to drastically reduce the time it
spends on setup and product changeo-
vers by implementing family setups and
a process where new products are set
up of ine via changeover tables. To be-
come even more exible, the company
recently invested in a new SMT line with
a SIPLACE SX2 and a SIPLACE SX1.
Developed especially for use in high-
mix environments, the SIPLACE SX
line is ideal for managing new product
introductions as well as the production
of prototypes and very small lots quickly
and ef ciently.
Paul E. Danchell A/S
Founded in 1966, Danish electronics
manufacturer Paul E. Danchell A/S has
become an established service provider
in the industry. Over 90 employees pro-
duce electronic modules for customers
in the radio, engineering and medical
industries in Jyderup near Copenhagen.
The company’s services range from
prototype production and manufactu-
ring-oriented design optimization to
materials procurement to testing and
after-sales services. Lot sizes range
from 100 to 1,000 units and are getting
smaller all the time.
„The new line makes us even more exible than we already were.
It represents an important step towards our future as a successful
electronics manufacturer.“

Paul E. Danchell A/S is a textbook ex-
ample of how electronic manufacturing
service (EMS) providers can be suc-
cessful in Europe. The company has for
many years focused on the production
of complex modules, such as boards for
machine controllers, satellite receivers
or powerful MPEG encoders/decoders.
Medical technology also plays an inc-
reasingly important role for the Danish
family-owned company with its more
than 90 highly trained employees.
High-Quality Equipment
When it comes to production equip-
ment, only the leading brands are
good enough for Danchell. That’s why
Danchell uses SIPLACE placement
machines, employs state-of-the-art AOI
(automated optical inspection) systems
and tests with the latest equipment.
All errors are recorded and analyzed
down to the smallest detail in its quality
management system.
Customers demand quality and
exibility
In addition to the ubiquitous demand
for top-notch quality, steadily dropping
lot sizes and customers’ demands for
more exible product deliveries keep
Danchell’s management busy.
“Batch sizes are shrinking dramatically,
and lead times are becoming shorter all
the time. Our customers demand high
quality with maximum delivery exibility,
which means that we must adapt our
processes and systems accordingly,”
says the technical director. For Stefan
Danchell, the main indicator of exibility
is the ability to execute product chan-
geovers with the fastest setups and the
shortest downtimes while maintaining a
high level of efciency and quality.
Optimized setup processes
Danchell took the rst step by optimi-
zing the setup processes on its existing
lines. Today, the feeders are installed
ofine on movable changeover tables,
which are then docked to the machine
when the product needs to be changed.
This improvement alone cuts down the
switchover time from almost two hours
to a little over ten minutes. Additional ef-
ciency improvements were generated
by creating setup families of products
with a similar component spectrum. By
clustering and optimizing these products
in SIPLACE Pro, many setup changeo-
vers can be avoided in their entirety
(“the fastest setup changeover is the
one you don’t have to execute in the
rst place”).
SIPLACE SX: The perfect solution for
high-mix production
In addition, Danchell invested in a third
SMT line with SIPLACE SX machines
which were developed especially for
quality-oriented high-mix production
environments.
The benet:
The new line, which includes a SI-
PLACE SX2 and a SIPLACE SX1,
provides not only urgently needed
capacities for more growth, but is able
to produce even the smallest lot sizes
as well as prototypes with exceptional
speed and efciency, thanks to innova-
tions like the SIPLACE MultiStar head,
which can switch between various
placement modes on-the-y.
The result:
While other equipment makers’ machi-
nes require head changes or even line
congurations to maximize their
efciency as possible, the SIPLACE
SX adjusts automatically to rapidly
changing requirements. And since the
placement heads of the SIPLACE SX
can process an exceptionally broad
component spectrum, the line can now
place components automatically which
previously had to be installed manually
in a very time-consuming process.
Paul E. Danchell A/S and SIPLACE
A new SIPLACE SX line helps the Danish electronics manufacturer to produce
even the smallest lot sizes efciently and with the quality its customers are
accustomed to.
