SIPLACE SX line
The Challenge
To meet rising demand and
get ready for future orders, the
company added a new line to its
SMT production.The main task
of the new machines is to reach
shorter times for product
changeovers. With the switch
from SIPLACE S20 to SIPLACE
SX, ELCON changed from
analog to digital placement
technology. The upgrade from
SIPLACE S20 machines to the
newest generation of SIPLACE
platforms had to be seamless
and trouble-free to avoid the loss
of time and money.
The SIPLACE Solution
By upgrading to three
SIPLACE SX machines with two
SIPLACE MultiStar heads and a
SIPLACE Very High Force Head
ELCON‘s line performance could
be tripled within a short time.
The intensive support by the
SIPLACE team made a fast
launch of the system possible -
the time from placing the order
to starting it up took only eight
weeks. After the installation, the
support from SIPLACE was still
far from being over: an intensive
introductory phase, during which
ELCON received active on-site
support from SIPLACE’s com-
missioning and service
people helped to switch to the
new machines without any
problems and fast.

The company with headquarters
in Hartmannsdorf is a leading
manufacturer and supplier of
innovative and future-oriented
telecommunication products and
network components for inter-
national telecom companies,
network operators, systems
manufacturers and integrators.
With 215 employees in Hart-
mannsdorf and sales offi ces in
England and France, ELCON
has a Europe-wide presence
and its OEM and EMS revenues
amounted to 30 million euros in
2012. Within just a few years,
the company was able to nearly
double its turnover.

The mood was upbeat at
ELCON Systemtechnik during
the festive start-up of the new
line. “After only two weeks, we
had forgotten many of our
worries regarding the switch to
the new machines,“ tells Romeo
Lentwojt. “The SIPLACE team
support was excellent, and the
process of converting our pro-
duction data worked smoothly as
well.“
Intensive support
Before the ELCON managers
made their investment
decision, SIPLACE helped them
to make an informed choice.
Visits to other customers and
the SIPLACE SMT production
facility in Munich allowed them
to experience the SIPLACE SX
in action.
SIPLACE also impressed with
fast delivery: “From placing the
order for the new line to starting
it up in our plant, it only took us
eight weeks. During this time,
SIPLACE hosted our people in
Munich in order to familiarize
them with the new line’s tech-
nology and operation. After the
installation we went through a
two-week introductory phase,
during which we received per-
manent on-site support from
SIPLACE’s commissioning and
service people.”
New targets
The project had a clear target:
making ELCON ready for the
future. Consequently, the com-
pany placed great emphasis on
the fl exibility of its new
machines, because lot sizes
ranging from 1 to 5,000 and
a broad spectrum of products
made time-consuming change-
overs necessary.
“Flexibility was our most impor-
tant criterion for the new
placement line. Now we strive
for product changeover times in
the 20-to-30-minute range. This
is a huge improvement in terms
of effi ciency and equipment
utilization.”
Fast introduction of new
products
No problem – thanks to
SIPLACE’s software for creating
placement programs. For
example, programmers can
assign so-called wildcards for
yet-unknown components.
With the fl exible SIPLACE
MultiStar heads and the
powerful SIPLACE Very High
Force Head on the new line,
ELCON is also ready for the full
component spectrum, including
parts that are unusually large,
long and/or tall.
In conclusion
Accordingly the overall assess-
ment is positive: “Customer
satisfaction is our top priority,“
says Romeo Lentwojt.
“ASM Assembly System shares
this attitude. All that’s left to say
is that the initial apprehension
regarding the upgrade from our
older machines to the latest
generation has given way to
enthusiasm.”
