1.5.5 Operational Safety
▪ NEVER open any of the protective covers if you are not totally familiar with the use and functioning
of the machine! The protective covers may only be opened during operation if you are expressly
requested to do so in this Operating Manual or by a dialog in the station software!
▪ The key-operated switch may only be unlocked by qualified and specially trained personnel!
It may only be unlocked during operation if you are expressly requested to do so in this Operating
Manual or by a dialog in the station software!
▪ NEVER place your head or arms in the gantry traveling range while the station is switched on!
▪ Never remove feeders from the changeover table while the machine is in operation.
▪ Never make changes, however minor, unless you are totally aware of the effect they will have on the
overall functioning of the system.
▪ The stations must always be set up, retooled and maintained by appropriately trained personnel.
▪ Only use original spare parts and authorized accessories of ASM Assembly Systems. The use of
other parts will affect safety and can invalidate the liability for any consequential damage.
▪ The operational safety of SMD placement machines can only be guaranteed if the system is used
as prescribed and in accordance with the instructions in the Operating Manual.
▪ The machine key and the key for the key-operated switch must be kept safe so that they can only be
accessed by qualified personnel!
▪ If you need to work on the machine and you do not have adequately trained personnel at your com-
pany, always call in a service engineer from ASM Assembly Systems ! ASM Assembly Systems will
not accept liability for any damage or consequential damage that is the result of incorrect work.
▪ Machine operators may only carry out work for which they have been adequately trained and with
which they are totally familiar!
▪ Always follow any safety regulations specific to your country!
WARNING
Type and source of the danger
The following points MUST be observed in order to maintain operational safety:
DANGER
Type and source of the danger
This machine is electrically driven. When electrical devices are in use, certain parts carry
dangerous voltage levels!
Switch the placement machine off at the main switch and disconnect it from the power supply
before carrying out any work on live components.
There is a risk of fatal injuries, severe injuries and/or considerable damage to equipment if any
of these instructions are not followed!
WARNING
Type and source of the danger
In spite of all the safety precautions taken by the manufacturer, failure to use the system as
prescribed can result in severe physical injury (e.g. from the moving gantry) and/or
considerable damage to equipment!
For the machine to be safe, it must be used correctly by qualified personnel and all warnings
must be observed!
Some work on the machine (e.g. setting up) requires training that goes beyond the scope of this
Manual.

2.1 Operating Tape Feeders - General
This sections provides a general description of how to operate the tape feeders. This description applies
equally to all tape feeders.
Detailed descriptions which only apply to specific tape feeders can be found in the separate sections for
the individual devices.
2.1.1 Function
The feeders described below are used to handle components on tapes in the placement machines of the
SIPLACE family. Information about the components which can be used with these feeders and about the
step sizes to be set can be found in "1.3 Technical Data" [ ➙ 10].
▪ The step size can be set using the buttons on the control unit at the back of the feeder.
▪ The tape is moved over a transport wheel, which is driven by a geared motor. The gearing trans-
mission has been designed to ensure that a power feed of 2 mm precisely corresponds to one
revolution of the motor.
▪ The positioning accuracy is achieved by the drive moving the component past the pickup position
and then back to a defined stopper. The number of motor revolutions is determined by a sensor.
▪ When using the
3x8 mm S
,
8mmSII
and
12/16 mm S
feeders, the component to be processed is
held in the pickup position by a component cover controlled by a lifting magnet and is released just
before pickup, by pulling back the component cover. After pickup, the component cover is closed
again, to prevent components jumping during tape transport.
▪ The cover tape on the tape is pretensioned with the help of a rocker (rocker 1) which is removed
during transportation. This cover tape is discarded by being fed into a foil container by the combing
action of two motor-driven toothed wheels. At the same time, the rocker is retensioned.
▪The
SDP
tape feeders have the same basic design as the respective
S
feeders. The main difference
is a greater tape feed through for high components. Operation of the
SDP
tape feeders does not
differ form operation of the "normal" S feeders of the same design.
2.1.2 Operating Controls - Function
The controls for the various tape feeders follow the same basic design and differ only in the number of
tracks addressed by the controls and the type of output shown on the controls.
All controls have the following buttons:
▪ The green "Index" button for manual tape transport
▪ The yellow "Foil" button for foil removal
The 3x8 mm S feeders also have the blue "Select" button with which you can select the track to be
operated.
