1 Introduction
This instruction manual contains basic information that must be observed when setting up, operat-
ing and maintaining the ASM ProcessLens® solder paste inspection machine (Single-lane and
Dual-lane). This instruction manual contains notes that must be observed to guarantee your per-
sonal safety and to avoid damage to equipment.
NOTICE
The ASM ProcessLens® solder paste inspection machines are of largely identical design.
Any differences will be mentioned specifically.
The diagrams in this instruction manual show the ASM ProcessLens Dual-lane. These dia-
grams also apply in principle to the ASM ProcessLens Single-lane. Additional diagrams will
be shown for any deviations.

1.1.1 Machine description
ASM ProcessLens: 5D SPM

ASM ProcessLens is a highly accurate and
extremely flexible 5D inline Solder Paste
Measurement (SPM) system. Developed
primarily for ASM ProcessExpert, it com-
bines optical 2D and 3D measurement tech-
nologies for outstanding measurement reli-
ability.
As a modern high-end 3D SPM system,
ASM ProcessLens measures the properties
of solder deposits using the Moiré fringe pro-
jection method, but with significant improve-
ments:
It projects the light with a special chip hold-
ing 8 million electronically controlled micro-
mirrors. The Digital Light Projector (DLP)
system adapted by ASM operates error-free
and with much more precision, flexibility and
speed than traditional 3D SPI systems with
piezo elements.
In short, ASM ProcessLens sets new bench-
marks in accuracy, flexibility, measurement
reliability, and speed.
The ASM ProcessLens solder paste inspec-
tion machines are available in two different
variants:

ASM ProcessLens Dual-lane
The ASM ProcessLens is an inline solder paste inspection machine which visually measures 100%
of paste deposits on any given product in 3D and 2D and compares them to their expected volume,
X and Y position, area, mean height and shape.
It also checks for bridging between adjacent pads and coplanarity failures for a group of pads be-
longing to the same component.
This visual control is based on the stencil's Gerber data which contains all the apertures, their
shape, size, orientation and position, the fiducials, as well as the user-defined stencil thickness.
ASM ProcessLens measures and dynamically compensates the warpage within each PCB during
the inspection to keep the images in optimum focus by adjusting the height of the Z-axis accord-
ingly. The evolution and history of the printing process can be visualized through the SPC (Statist-
ical Process Control) package delivered with the machine.
ASM ProcessLens Single-lane machines have a one-stage single conveyor.
ASM ProcessLens Dual-lane machines have a three-stage dual conveyor. Synchronous inspection
can be performed with two boards loaded at the same time.
ASM ProcessLens together with ASM ProcessEngine pre-placement is a product called ASM
ProcessExpert which is a process tool to analyze stencil layouts and automatically stabilize, char-
acterize, proactively control and improve the printing process.
