HALL EFFECT SENSOR
Chapter Issue 1 Sep 02 Technical Reference Manual 20.5
HALL EFFECT SENSOR
Description A Hall effect transducer and magnet are combined in a common package, with
a gap between the transducer and magnet. With power ON and the gap clear,
the output transistor is switched on and the signal voltage is pulled down to 0V.
When a ferrous vane is passed through the gap, the Hall effect is cancelled,
switching off the output transistor and the signal is 12V via the digital input
circuit.

With Power ON and a voltmeter connected with +ve to signal (green) and -ve
to 0V (black), the following results should be obtained:

OPTO SENSORS
Diffuse Type Opto Diffuse sensors can distinguish between objects with various reflection proper-
ties, these emit a beam of pulsed red light which is reflected as the target enters
the scanning distance. When the intensity of the received light exceeds that set
by the sensitivity control, ie when the board is detected, the sensor output is
switched ON.

Setting Up
Procedure
The procedure for setting up the diffuse optos (board at left and board at right
sensors) is fully detailed in the Rail System chapter of this manual (Adjustments
and Settings - Board at Left/Right Optos).
Testing Procedure If the sensor fails to operate:
1. Disconnect the diffuse opto.
2. Short out Pins 2 and 3 on the socket.
3. Check that the relevant NextMove LED is illuminated or that the pin breakout
is 0V to confirm, or otherwise, that the sensor is defective.
Background
Suppressed Opto
The background suppressed opto sensor is a diffuse type sensor. The sensor
incorporates a background suppression capability and a potentiometer for
precisely adjusting the sensing distance.
The opto emits a pulsed red light which is reflected by a target when it enters
the sensing distance, not only sensing the reflected light but also the distance
of the object to the sensor.
When the beam of light hits the board or screen, some of the diffused light is
reflected back and the sensor NPN transistor output state is switched ON.
