Cleaning the Pump Cartridge
Introduction Cleaning of the pump cartridge and parts should be done thoroughly. It is critical that
all material is removed from all surfaces, particularly interior passages and threads.
Allowing partially cured material to remain on threads, in or on any other surface can
cause seizing of parts and other damage.
To avoid damage to machined and polished surfaces, do not use any sharp edged
implements.
The pump support kit contains pipe cleaners, cotton swabs and plastic bottle brushes
to facilitate cleaning.
Interior surfaces are considered clean when a fresh pipe cleaner or cotton swab
remains clean after being pushed through the passage.
Attention
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS. OBSERVE THE APPLICABLE MATERIAL SAFETY
DATA WARNINGS FOR CLEANING MATERIALS.
Attention
CAUTION. Be sure to use only the solvents recommended by the material
manufacturer for cleaning the pump.
Procedure Reference Figure 7 and Figure 8 when performing the following:
1. Gently clean the inside of the cartridge in a solvent suitable for removal of mate-
rial in pump. Cotton swabs and pipe cleaners immersed in the cleaning solvent,
are recommended for cleaning.
2. Use a pipe cleaner saturated with solvent to push the material from the feed tube
assembly. Repeat the procedure, using a clean pipe cleaner each time, until all
traces of material have been removed.
3. Clean the needle holder nut, washer, needle, and threads of the leadscrew.
4. Using denatured alcohol and a cotton swab, clean the bore of the cartridge hous-
ing and wipe down the outside of the housing.
5. Using a shop wipe and solvent, clean the leadscrew, making sure to remove all
traces of material from between the threads.

Operation and Maintenance Guide 21
Reassembly of the Pump Cartridge
Introduction The following procedure is used to lubricate and assemble the cartridge assembly
(Figure 8) for lubrication points and orientation of parts on the leadscrew.
Procedure Lubricate and assemble the cartridge as follows:
1. Place a small amount of Die Makers grease onto a clean surface such as a shop
wipe.
2. Using a toothpick, apply grease to the groove above the threads on the lead-
screw and snap the E-ring into the groove.
Attention
Note which side of the washer is marked with the word TOP on the stepped side. The
washer must be assembled with TOP towards the motor end of the cartridge, to avoid
pump leakage.
3. Slide the pump washer over the leadscrew so that the side marked TOP faces
the E-Ring.
4. Assemble a new the O-ring onto the leadscrew and carefully move it up against
the washer.
5. Apply a coat of Die Makers grease between the new O-ring and the pump
washer.
Attention
Avoid applying grease to the threads of the leadscrew.
6. Apply a liberal coat of Die Makers grease to the O-ring and the surrounding area
on the shaft of the leadscrew. The O-ring must slide freely on the shaft during
pump operation.
7. Clean off any grease, which may have contacted the threaded portion of the
leadscrew.
8. Insert the leadscrew assembly into the top of the cartridge (threaded end first)
and snap the assembly together.
9. Insert the two 2-56 socket head cap screws (12, Figure 6) into the mounting
flange holes on the feed tube.
10. Position the feed tube on the cartridge and thread the screws into the cartridge.
11. Tighten the cap screws partially, so as to maintain an equal gap between the
mounting flange and the cartridge on both ends, while still allowing for final posi-
tioning of the feed tube.
12. Hold the cartridge straight up and down with the feed tube facing you.

13. Adjust the feed tube so that it aligns with the lead screw vertically.
14. Continue tightening the cap screws alternately so as to maintain an equal gap
between the mounting flange and the cartridge on both ends.
