Clinch Functional Problems
The following presents various functional problems that may be encountered,
the general cause of the problem and the resolution of the problem.
Cause Possible Resolution
1
Motion fault on insertion head. Anvil setting too high.
Reset anvil height. Refer to Anvil Height
Adjustment procedure.
Cutter backstroke too large.
Reset cutter back stroke. Refer to Cutter
procedure.
Servo Amplifier problems.
Refer to Servo Chassis Assembly

Wiring problems. Repair or replace faulty wiring.
Cutter cylinder binding. Worn O-rings,
lubrication.
Repair, replace and lubricate O-rings.
Pneumatic valve/solenoid failure. Repair or replace valve/solenoid.
Failed/pinched pneumatic lines. Repair or replace faulty pneumatic lines.
Wiring problems. Repair or replace faulty wiring.
Cutter timing stroke greater than 45 msecs.
Check IM Diagnostics Rapid Motion Timing
and adjust to 35-45 msecs.

Sequence of Adjustments
This section describes the sequence of adjustments.
Radial
To make adjustments on the Radial machine, do the following in this order:
1. Chain System – 6 steps
(Refer to the Sequencer section in Maintenance Topics in Voyager)
a. Chain tensioner set @ 1.0 in. compression.
b. Chain deflection within 1.0 – 1.5 in.
c. Align chain/carrier clip to cutter station.
d. Align feeders to carrier clips as needed.
e. Align chain unloader to carrier clip/component.
f. Align verifier test head assembly as needed.

2. Cutter Station – 3 steps
(Refer to the Cutter Station section in Maintenance Topics in Voyager)
a. Disassemble, clean, and lubricate.
b. Adjust backup roller using eccentric pin.
c. Adjust stroke.
3. Dispensing Head – 8 steps
(Refer to the Feeders section in Maintenance Topics in Voyager)
a. Disassemble, clean, and lubricate.
b. Verify driver clearance (.001 in.).
c. Adjust cutter clearance (.0015 in.).
d. Adjust return stroke stop (.006 – .010 in.).
e. Adjust anti-backup dog stop (.002 in.).
f. Align dispensing head to carrier clip maintaining .030 in.
clearance between pusher and carrier clip boss.
g. Adjust pitch wheel to place component leads in line with notches
in pusher.
h. Adjust forward stroke.
i. Check/adjust refire contact.
4. Rotary Table Squareness – 2 steps
(Refer to the Positioning System section in Maintenance Topics in
Voyager)
a. Adjust bushing adapters so .250 in. diameter locator pin slides
easily in locator holes.
b. Rotary disk guide wheels should turn freely using thumb and
forefinger.
5. Insertion Head Tooling – 4 steps
(Refer to the Insertion Head Assembly section in Maintenance Topics
in Voyager)
a. Remove, disassemble, clean, and lubricate.
b. Check/adjust front to back looseness.
c. Check/adjust side to side looseness.
d. Using granite block and setup fixture, adjust head centering
within +/- .001 in.

6. Insertion Head Assembly on Machine – 3 steps
(Refer to the Insertion Head Assembly section in Maintenance Topics
in Voyager)
a. Theta axis alignment, setup tool to BEC plate.
b. Reinstall head tooling.
c. Set Critical Axis Positions (head full up, full down, and insert).
7. Component Transfer Assembly – 9 steps
(Refer to the Component Transfer Assembly section in Maintenance
Topics in Voyager)
a. Set bottom guide and spring latch heights using straight edge.
b. Check clip support to chain clearance (.008 – .010 in.).
c. Set upper guide .005 – .008 in. above carrier clip.
d. Check/adjust CTA bottom guide to 2-legged bug in insertion
head tooling (this aligns CTA to head).
e. Check/adjust VCTA to carrier clip alignment (.030 in., this aligns
chain to CTA).
f. Check/adjust latch timing (bottom guide and spring latch close
on component leads simultaneously).
g. Adjust CTA stroke at insertion head (.005 – .006 in. deflection
typical).
h. Check/adjust cam position at end of stroke (.030 – .050 in.).
i. Check/adjust CTA switches (“at head” and “at pickup”)
pneumatic driven CTA only.
j. Check/adjust cam position at end of stroke (.060 – .080 in.)
pneumatic driven CTA only.
VCD
To make adjustments on the VCD 8 machine, do the following in this order:
Sequencer Section
1. Dispense head PM and adjustments.
3. Sequencer idler sprocket spring tension adjustment.
3. Pitchwheel to head chain drive sprocket adjustment.
