6. Insertion Head Assembly on Machine – 3 steps
(Refer to the Insertion Head Assembly section in Maintenance Topics
in Voyager)
a. Theta axis alignment, setup tool to BEC plate.
b. Reinstall head tooling.
c. Set Critical Axis Positions (head full up, full down, and insert).
7. Component Transfer Assembly – 9 steps
(Refer to the Component Transfer Assembly section in Maintenance
Topics in Voyager)
a. Set bottom guide and spring latch heights using straight edge.
b. Check clip support to chain clearance (.008 – .010 in.).
c. Set upper guide .005 – .008 in. above carrier clip.
d. Check/adjust CTA bottom guide to 2-legged bug in insertion
head tooling (this aligns CTA to head).
e. Check/adjust VCTA to carrier clip alignment (.030 in., this aligns
chain to CTA).
f. Check/adjust latch timing (bottom guide and spring latch close
on component leads simultaneously).
g. Adjust CTA stroke at insertion head (.005 – .006 in. deflection
typical).
h. Check/adjust cam position at end of stroke (.030 – .050 in.).
i. Check/adjust CTA switches (“at head” and “at pickup”)
pneumatic driven CTA only.
j. Check/adjust cam position at end of stroke (.060 – .080 in.)
pneumatic driven CTA only.
VCD
To make adjustments on the VCD 8 machine, do the following in this order:
Sequencer Section
1. Dispense head PM and adjustments.
3. Sequencer idler sprocket spring tension adjustment.
3. Pitchwheel to head chain drive sprocket adjustment.

4. Timing hub adjustment.
5. Guide block and bracket adjustments.
6. Centering top guide to pitchwheels.
7. Top guide to pitchwheel adjustment.
8. Component transfer timing adjustment.
9. Sequencer chain timing adjustment.
Inserter Section
Depth stop adjustment is critically dependent on component size data. Select
Product Editor > Component database, and if necessary, change the body
diameter and wire diameter entries. Do not rely on the master database
generic values. These dimensions will have an effect on how tightly the
components are clinched to the PCB.
Also check in Production Control > Control > Change Depth Stop Offset.
This should be at 0 (zero) before doing mechanical setup; a user might have
altered this as a quick fix.
1. Anvil height adjustment.
2. PM insertion head tooling.
3. Insertion head span axis adjustment.
4. Head drive position setup.
5. Head height adjustment.
6. Head chain to tooling alignment.
7. Cam orientation.
8. Cam alignment.
9. Centering fingers alignment.
10. Centering fingers height adjustment.
11. Centering fingers inward adjustment.
12. Cam timing.
13. Remove clinch assembly and PM, install clinch assembly.
14. Clinch to head alignment.
15. Clinch axis span adjustment.

16. Lead length setup.
17. Cutter setup.

Before calling Universal Instruments Technical Support, please have the
following information, and be prepared to answer the following questions.

1. Provide a detailed description of the symptoms. Including the
following:
a. Is the machine down?
b. Is the problem intermittent or consistent?
c. Is the problem machine specific?
d. Is the problem product specific?
e. Is the problem head specific?
f. Is the problem repeatable? If so, exactly what steps are taken to
create the problem? It is important to provide a step-by-step
description.
2. What steps are required to recover or clear the condition: reload the
product, press and release the E-Stop switch, or power cycle?
3. Provide a detailed description of any events immediately before the
problem. Include the following:
a. When did the problem start?
b. Have any software updates been done recently? If yes, what
version of software was the machine going from and to?
