1.7 Safety requirements
for operating cooling units within the European Union
The following information applies for cooling units operated within the European Community that
feature a closed refrigerant circuit. Further requirements may apply in some member states
(e.g. due to environmental policy).
The cooling units contain components with operating pressures that require compliance with the
Pressure Equipment Directive and EN 378.
In addition to the manufacturer requirements regarding the design, equipment and testing of the
cooling unit prior to delivery, the operator of this type of system also has additional obligations in
accordance with the standard EN 378 or other nationally valid regulations. These apply to
installing, operating and retesting cooling units.
1.7.1 Installation
When installing the cooling unit in basement floors or upper floors of a building without sufficient
emergency routes, requirements are placed on the installation location for the protection of persons
in accordance with EN 378.
With regard to the existing refrigerant and the refrigerant fill quantity (see type plate) of the cooling
unit, a specific minimum room volume must be maintained.
It is thereby ensured that a refrigerant leakage in the event of an accident and resulting oxygen
displacement will not have any effect on human health.
Formula:
Min. room volume [m³] = refrigerant fill quantity [kg] / practical limit value [kg/m³]

Chapters 5.1 and 5.2 must be observed to ensure fault-free operation!
1.7.2 Operation
The owner or operator of the cooling unit is obliged to define measures for emergencies
(accidents and diagnoses). The operator must draw up quick reference instructions based on the
existing operating instructions and make them available to employees.
The quick reference instructions must be clearly displayed in the immediate area of the cooling unit.

The owner or operator is obliged to keep a system log for the cooling unit.
The system log must either be kept close to the cooling unit or, if the information is saved on a
computer of the owner or operator , a print-out must be kept close to the cooling unit. The information
must be made available to trained personnel during repair work or retesting.

1.7.3 Regular leakage checks
The operator is obliged to subject the cooling unit to regular leakage checks.

1.7.4 Retesting
Regular tests (retesting) carried out by qualified personnel are specified for the cooling units based
on EN 378 to ensure compliance with the minimum requirements for health and safety.
The operator is responsible for carrying out the retesting.

1.8 Correct use of the cooling unit
The cooling unit is designed to be used with a closed refrigerant circuit and solely for cooling defined
operating mediums within the specified temperature limits. The machine must only be used for the
purposes described in these operating instructions or other applicable documents.
Correct use of the machine also includes:
• Compliance with the applicable safety regulations in the country of use
• Observance of the operating instructions and all safety notes
• Timely and professional execution of all inspection and maintenance work as well as all
retesting required by EN 378
• The presence and correct function of all safety features
• Compliance with all maximum permissible operating values and performance data as
specified in the chapter "Technical data"
1.9 Incorrect use of the cooling unit
Any other utilization of the machine or usage for purposes other than those described above
constitutes incorrect use. This includes in particular:
• Operation outside the specified temperature limits
• Unauthorized additions and/or modifications
• The use of an operating medium in the cooling water circuit that does not meet the
specifications
• Operation in potentially explosive environments
Risk of personal injury or damage, liability exclusion, loss of warranty!
Incorrect use can result in injury, material damage and loss of warranty. All associated risks are
borne solely by the operator or user.
The machine must only be used for its intended purpose!
