Gantry Safety Instructions for Working with Strong Magnetic Fields
22 Servicemanual (internal version) SIPLACE D Series
X Remove the packaging, with the magnetic track inside, from the workplace area.
X Repeat the above steps for each magnetic track.
X Continue with the repairs/replacements.
Fitting Magnets
X Place the unopened magnet + packaging, provided by Siemens, within easy reach of the machine.
X Open the lid and remove the magnetic track.
X Install the magnetic track in the machine.
X Remove the empty packaging.
X Repeat the above steps for each magnetic track.
X Continue with the repairs/replacements.
Observing the Safety Notes
ATTENTION:
The magnetic track may only be fitted by Siemens technicians.
DANGER: FATAL HAZARD
X Persons with active implants (e.g. pacemakers) or other ferromagnetic implants are expressly
prohibited from working with these devices or from being in their vicinity.
Keep a safe distance from the motor!
X Due to the powerful magnetic forces of attraction, special safety measures must be observed
when in the direct vicinity of the magnetic track or the flexible primary part. Never manually
move heavy or wide steel or iron objects near to the magnetic track. Since the magnetic
forces of attraction are not visible, it is easy to underestimate their effect in the vicinity of the
magnetic track. These forces of attraction can take effect very abruptly. This means that,
when near to the track, ferromagnetic objects (of steel or iron) which are around the same
size as the magnetic track, can suddenly develop a force several thousand Newton strong.
X When handling the magnetic track, always wear suitable protective clothing (e.g. gloves,
shoes etc.).
X Only specially trained Siemens technicians may perform assembly work and other tasks
concerning the replacement of the magnetic track.
X In case of emergencies, always have two solid, nonmagnetic wedges (approx. .10° to 15°,
made of a material like aluminum) ready, plus a nonmagnetic hammer (approx. 2 to 3 kg).
These tools are needed in emergencies, to release objects which are stuck to the magnetic
track and to free any trapped limbs (fingers, hand, foot). Never place the inductor coil
assembly of an iron core motor directly on the magnetic track.
X Electronic equipment and measuring devices could be damaged or destroyed by powerful
magnetic fields. Never place any devices with magnetic components near computers,
monitors or magnetic data carriers (e.g. hard disks, credit cards, audio and video tapes etc.).
DANGER: Keep a safe distance!
X Keep a distance of at least 45 cm between a magnetic track and other magnetic surfaces.
DANGER: Instructions for all EA technicians

Before you begin work on site, use the following procedure to check whether all safety
measures are being observed:
Read the list of safety measures, whenever service work is required at the customer site:
X Download the applicable safety instructions or print them out and take them with you to the place of
work.
X Before you begin work, make sure that the required packaging materials (empty magnet packaging)
and any other materials required for the repairs/replacements are available.
X Before you begin work, go through the safety instructions with the other SIEMENS technicians
involved in the work.
X Begin the work.

WARNING: STRONG MAGNETIC FIELDS!
Always follow the special safety instructions when working in the vicinity of powerful magnetic
fields, caused by the permanent magnets.
ATTENTION:
Make sure that you do not scratch or bend the scale!

5. Zero pulse on scale
X Move the relevant changeover table out of the
machine.
X Switch off the machine.
X Move the gantry into the position which allows
you best access.
X Loosen the two screws (3) fastening the
incremental encoder (2). Let the encoder
dangle down below the gantry, from its cable.
X Use a scribing iron to mark the starting position
(4) of the scale, near the deflection unit,
opposite the X motor.
X Wear protective gloves.
X Use the chisel to lever the old scale (1) off the
machine frame and then remove the scale.
X Clean the contact surface with a cleansing
tissue and ethanol, to remove any remaining
adhesive. The contact surface must be clean
and free of grease. If you are unable to
achieve this with the cleansing tissue alone,
use the chisel to help you.
ATTENTION:
Make sure that you do not scratch the
contact surface!
