Chapter 3. Maintenance
3.1. Maintenance of the Tape Feeder
Caution
Repair and maintenance need to be done in a clean and
safe place. If the feeder is handled with excessive force, the
feeder could be damaged. Pay attention to safety and try not
to damage or lose components. Be careful so that fingers
don’t get stuck during maintenance.
3.1.1. Lubrication and removing foreign matter
Mechanically moving parts are fully lubricated before shipment. However, because of
continuous movements, the duration of fully lubricated condition of the following parts is
short. Since these parts play an important role in tape feeder movement, they should be
checked regularly and kept well lubricated.
Caution
It is positively necessary that these areas (Shutter, Rachet,
Take-up Reel and Sprocket) are cleaned (Removing foreign
matter) and lubricated.
And Occasionally check if there is foreign matter.
Especially for 0603 feeders, the check should be carried out
with care because the supplied chip is too small to be found
easily by vision.
Clean the sprocket and ratchet of 8~16mm tape feeders with
air once a week.
3.1.1.1. Shutter area (8mm~16mm)
Remove foreign matter (chip) and apply the lubricant on the surface of the shutter
touching the tape guide so that it moves back and forth smoothly.

Caution
Do not apply grease on the tip of the shutter where shutter
and parts contact. Otherwise, error may occur while
supplying parts.

3.1.2. Removal of foreign matter on the sprocket and ratchet areas
If a component (chip) is held between the gear teeth due to transfer error or pickup error
of the component placer while components are supplied, pitch error or component supply
problems may result. Therefore, check for foreign matter whenever replacing the tape and
remove it. Especially for 0603 feeders, the check should be carried out with care because
the supplied chip is too small to be found easily by vision.
Then for the smooth movement between ratchet assembled with sprocket, ratchet pole
and pitch pole, remove foreign materials such as chip and check the state of grease
application.
Since the foreign materials on the vinyl are collected at the point where the vinyl is
peeled off (at the tape guide slot for 8/12/16mm feeders or at the shutter for 22m and
wider feeders), periodically check for foreign materials and remove them.

Feeders)
3.1.3. Removing foreign material from probe pin terminal
Since the SM feeder communicates with the machine through the probe pin, the probe pin
must be maintained free of foreign materials. With the feeder installed in the feeder base,
if the status of the feeder LED is abnormal, check the state of the pin probe first. If it has
no problem, check the control board at the front side of the feeder base where it contacts
with the probe pin. If there are foreign materials, remove them.
3.1.4. Removal of Part Dropped from 8mm Tape
When parts are supplied from the 8mm feeder, the parts (chips) dropped from the tape
due to feeding error and pickup error of the chip mounter are collected into the dump box
as shown in the following figure.
