4.4 Upgrading from a previous version
4.4.1 Conditions / downward compatibility
Installing different versions of EDM on Master and Client should be avoided. If different versions of
SIPLACE Pro are used on the EDM Master and the EDM lines, some restrictions apply because the format
of the data transferred depends on the SIPLACE Pro version used. During an upgrade, the Master Server,
all Line Servers and all Clearing Pools must therefore be converted to EDM 1.9 (and thus to SIPLACE Pro
9.2).
EDM 1.9 can use all templates which were created for EDM 1.1 or later, as well as custom workflows from
EDM 1.1 or later.
Existing filter settings are retained and updated, but it is recommended that you manually inspect the
converted file (it may be that your own custom changes have been superseded by improvements to the
default configuration).
4.4.2 Simultaneous upgrade over all lines
Where possible, production on all the lines to be upgraded should be suspended for the duration of the
upgrade. As soon as all the components have been converted, production can be restarted. The upgrade
operation is carried out as follows:
1. Interrupt production on all the lines to be upgraded.
2. Transfer all notifications from the Line Servers to the Master Server.
3. Accept/reject all notifications in the Clearing Pool.
4. Close all EDM applications.
5. Install SIPLACE Pro and than EDM Line Server on all lines.
6. Install SIPLACE Pro and then the EDM Master Server on the Master Server.
CAUTION:
To avoid all notifications still in the Clearing Pool from being lost, the EDM database
must not be deleted.
7. Resume production.
Simultaneous upgrade across all the lines is to be preferred to a gradual upgrade of individual lines
(insofar as this is possible).
4.4.3 Gradual upgrade of individual lines / compatibility mode
If it is not possible to perform a simultaneous upgrade across all the lines, EDM provides a compatibility
mode which permits restricted operation of an EDM 1.7 Line Server in conjunction with a Master Server
from an earlier version (as of EDM 1.4) for the duration of the upgrade. This compatibility mode must not
be used for long-term mixed operation of an EDM 1.7 Line Server with a Master Server from an earlier
version of EDM.

In compatibility mode, it is still possible for an EDM Line Server to pull/push data from the Master Server. It
is not, however, possible to send notifications to the Master Server. All the notifications which arise during
compatibility mode are saved, and can be transferred to an EDM Master Server when compatibility mode
is terminated.
Gradual upgrading of individual lines is carried out as follows:
1. Interrupt production on one of the lines to be upgraded.
2. Transfer all notifications from the Line Server of this line to the Master Server.
3. Install SIPLACE Pro on the Line Server of this line.
4. Install the EDM Line Server on the Line Server of this line.
5. Resume production on this line.
6. Repeat steps 1-5 for the other lines to be upgraded.
7. Accept/reject all notifications in the Clearing Pool.
8. Shut down the Master Server.
9. Install SIPLACE Pro and the EDM Master Server on the Master Server.
CAUTION:
To avoid all notifications still in the Clearing Pool from being lost, the EDM database
must not be deleted.
10. Start the Master Server.

5 Configuration
5.1 Settings in SIPLACE Pro Desk
To guarantee proper operation of SIPLACE EDM, it is necessary to change some settings in SIPLACE Pro
Desk.
• SIPLACE EDM associates objects on the Master Server and the Line Servers using their names, i.e. an
object must have the same name on all computers. It is recommended that you suppress the ability to
rename and create objects on EDM lines using the user permissions management facilities in SIPLACE
Pro.
• The Vision Data Manager (VDM) must be activated on all SIPLACE Pro Desk installations which are to
participate in EDM to allow Vision data (BLOBs), camera parameters and illumination parameters to be
processed for the line and the station.
• Some settings for SIPLACE Pro Desk (under "Tools->Settings->General Settings"???) must be
consistent across all EDM Client computers and the EDM Master. Currently, this applies to
o "Vision Data Management" on/off (we recommend "on"), and
o the two options for the extended MC number range (Twin Head and CPP head)
5.2 EDM-specific settings
CAUTION:
After any change has been made to the configuration files, it is recommended that
all EDM applications and the EDM service on the computers concerned should be
restarted.
5.2.1 Necessary settings
The following options must generally be entered manually in the EDM Master and EDM line configuration
files after installation.
• Alias for the computer:
The EDM lines involved are assigned more readable names in this section. The aliases must be
the same on all the EDM computers. If no aliases are entered, the network IDs of the computers
are used for display purposes (see 5.2.3.31 Aliases).
NOTE:
Aliases should always be defined for push mode.
