2 What is IPC-HERMES-9852
2.1 Introduction
IPC-HERMES-9852 is a new communication protocol for SMT lines and can replace the IPC
SMEMA interface. With this protocol, it is possible to transfer more information compared to the
current ICP SMEMA interface. Among these are, for example:
●
Unique board IDs
●
Barcodes
●
Conveyor speed,
●
Board length and board width
●
Board thickness
●
Clearance
●
Weight
All this information can be transferred over the whole line without interruption.

NOTICE
Shuttle Extension and the advanced conveyor interface (Advanced PCB) are not sup-
ported
IPC-HERMES-9852 does not support Shuttle Extensions and the advanced conveyor inter-
face (Advanced PCB) on the machines. See also 6 "Restrictions" [}47].
Prerequisites - Printer
●
DEK printer V9 (software build 9.18.2.109 or higher) with single-stage conveyor
Prerequisites - ProcessLens
●
ASM ProcessLens 2.0 Dual Lane and software version 4.0.1.0 or higher.
●
ASM ProcessLens 2.5 SP1 HF3 with Windows 10 operating system.
●
IPC-HERMES-9852 V1.0 is supported.
●
IPC-HERMES-9852 is only supported on a ProcessLens dual lane platform. IPC-HER-
MES-9852 cannot be enabled with other conveyor systems.
●
ASM ProcessLens 2.0 Dual Lane can be configured in the SIPLACE LAN or in the customer
LAN.

2.4 The most important advantages at a glance
Administrator Guide / Administrator Handbuch / 管理员指南 IPC-HERMES-9852 - V1.2 05/2020 11
2.4 The most important advantages at a glance
●
Protocol-based instead of “signal-based”
– Based on TCP/IP and XML, IPC-HERMES-9852 reduces the complexity. An extension to
integrate new functions is easily feasible.
●
Standard components instead of “special requirements”
– Cables, connectors and interfaces (Ethernet for example) are not expensive and easily
available.
●
Integrated data management instead of separate data holding
– Consistent board and data assignment allows for a new level of transparency.
– Specific advantages for the line production
●
Reduces investment and even line length
– Board tracking over the whole line is possible with only one board ID scanner.
●
Improves flexibility of the line layout
– Simple reconnection of all units even after complex modifications to the line layout.
●
Allows for seamless communication
– The generic communication backbone functions reliably in production lines with equipment
of different manufacturers and supports the gradual extension of existing lines.
●
Minimizes data and process complexity
– The product-oriented approach minimizes the effort of data handling.
