3.4 Checking shaft tip
As a shaft tip may get dirty by the long-term use, periodic shaft tip check is required.
This section describes how to check the shaft tip for HM head unit as an example.
1
Remove nozzles from all heads.
With nozzle station:
1. Open [Unit] - [Head] screen.
2. Select desired head unit from "Table
Select".
3. Press the [Nozzle Change] button.
4. Select "ALL" for Head Number and select
"Store nozzle" for Nozzle type on "Nozzle
Change" screen.
5. Pressing the [OK] button stores nozzles of
all heads to the nozzle station.
n
NOTE
If the nozzle station is not equipped with the machine,
open the machine safety cover and remove nozzles
manually.
e
2
Move head unit forward.
1. Press the emergency stop button and
then open the machine safety cover.
2. If the machine is carriage type, detach
carriage to easily access to the head unit.
3. Move the head unit to convenient
position for maintenance work.
3
Check the shaft tip.
Check the shaft tip visually with mirror or
similar tool. Perform this for all heads.
TIP
See "5.4 Cleaning shaft tip" described later to clean the

3.5.1 HM head: Checking spline shaft Z-axis operation
This section describes how to check the spline shaft Z-axis operation of HM head.
e
1
Move the head unit.
1. Press the emergency stop button and then open the machine safety cover.
2. If the machine is carriage type, detach carriage to easily access to the head unit.
3. Move the head unit forward.
2
Move up/down spline shaft Z-axis.
Press down the bottom of joint block for
spline Z-axis with finger. It returns to the
original position by releasing finger.
Check that no heaviness, unsteady
movement, or abnormal sound compare to
the other spline shaft is found.
n
NOTE
Do not touch the shaft as the surface may get rusted if
lacking grease.
c
CAUTION
Fatal error may occur if operating a machine with
unsteady movement of spline shaft. Stop the machine
in this case and contact YAMAHA sales representatives.
3.5.2 HM head: Checking/cleaning around spline shaft
Check and clean the area around the spline shaft of HM head.
e
1
Move the head unit.
1. Press the emergency stop button and then open the machine safety cover.
2. If the machine is carriage type, detach carriage to easily access to the head unit.

If dust or dirt is on the spline shaft, wipe it
with lint-free paper or cotton swab.
c
CAUTION
Do not completely wipe off grease on spline shaft
surface as the surface may get rusted due to the lack
of grease. However, apply grease for anti-rust with the
procedure on next page if the grease is wiped off due
to cleaning.

3.5.3 HM head: Applying grease to spline shaft (when required)
n
NOTE
Basically, it is not necessary to apply grease to spline shaft (Z-axis) of HM head unit. However, if touching the shaft
surface or solvent sprayed on it, the grease is removed and rust may appear. Slightly apply specified grease (NSL) for
anti-rust as needed.
e
1
Move the head unit.
1. Press the emergency stop button and
then open the machine safety cover.
2. Move the head unit to easily access to
the head unit.
3. Move the head unit forward.
2
Clean the spline shaft.
Clean the spline shaft with lint-free cloth or
cotton swab.
3
Apply grease to the spline shaft.
Apply and spread thinly specified grease
(NSL) with finger uniformly over the shaft
surface.
4
Wipe off the excess grease.
1. Move up/down the spline shaft several
times manually.
2. Wipe off excess grease on top and
bottom of the spline shaft with lint-free
