Testing aids required
• Calibration nozzle for coplanarity laser module, item no. 00301711
• Teach-in panel, external, item no. 00132207
NOTE
The values determined in this measuring routine will be written to the MA_ZUSATZ file.
1. From the main menu select "DETERMINE COPLANARITY COORDINATES".
The following display appears on the screen:
REMOVE ADAPTER FROM NOZZLE
PRESS <RETURN>
2. Open the protective cover, remove the adapter and press "RETURN".
The following display appears on the screen:
LASER CALIBRATION
PLEASE MOUNT THE CALIBRATION UNIT.
MACHINE MOVING TO SERVICE POSITION
PLEASE PRESS <START> KEY
NOTE
If, in the exceptional case, the error message "COMMUNICATION ERROR WITH LASER MODULE" is
displayed, proceed in accordance with WORKAROUND, section 12.6.
• Performance of the action displayed:
Wait for the placement head to assume the service position → Open the protective cover → mount the
calibration nozzle for the coplanarity laser module in correct position in the sleeve → tighten ring nut
(without pinching the O-ring) → if a cover is still mounted on the laser module it is to be removed now
→ close protective cover → switch on the control → press the "START" button.
3. The placement head moves above X/Y-position entered in the file MA_ZUSATZ or "_. sk"/ "_.kd". The Z-
height is referred to the "CENTERING CAMERA HEIGHT" and thus the "Head height".
4. The following screen display appears:
IS CALIBRATION UNIT OVER LASER BEAM ? (YES / NO)
NOTE
This message is also displayed if no position has been entered in the file MA_ZUSATZ or "_.sk" / "_.kd"
during initial start-up. Select the function key for "NO" in this case. The further procedure is identical to
the one described in the following.
• Visually inspect in X and Y-directions whether the nozzle is positioned approximately centrally
above that "eye" of the laser which is closest to the fixed conveyor side.
5. Select the appropriate function key for YES or NO.

➤ If YES has been pressed, continue with point 8.
➤ If NO has been pressed, the following screen display appears:
TEACH CALIBRATION UNIT OVER LASER BEAM
PRESS END-KEY ON THE TEACH PANEL
• Performance of the action:
Position the calibration nozzle in X/Y-directions so that it is approximately centered above the laser
"eye" that is closest to the conveyor (= above the laser beam) → press the "END" button on the teach
panel.
6. The following screen display appears:
DETERMINE COPLANARITY COORDINATES
START: SEARCH LASER FOCUS
7. The height of the laser focus is determined:
The z-axis is slowly moved downward, the highest and lowest point of the laser measuring range
are determined and the center of the measuring range is calculated therefrom.
8. If the measuring range could not be determined, the following screen display appears:
OLD LASER COORDINATES (X, Y, Z) ........... .......... .........
VALUES ARE NOT PLAUSIBLE AND ARE NOT SAVED
PRESS <RETURN>
Possible causes of error:
➤ The glass disk of the laser module is contaminated (for cleaning see Info!)
➤ Clamping of the sleeve (z-axis) is not working properly (for troubleshooting see Service Manual).
➤ Axis controller is not within the permissible tolerances (see measuring routine "CHECK AXIS AD-
JUSTMENT").
➤ The glass disk is damaged or another defect of the laser module has occurred (consult SMD Service
of Siemens AG!).
➤ The serial connection to the coplanarity laser module or serial multiplexer are defective (contact SMD
Service of Siemens AG).

For safety reasons the customer is not permitted to perform any troubleshooting activity other than cle-
aning work (with the machine turned off) on the laser module itself!
• Press "RETURN" and after troubleshooting has been terminated start calibration anew.
9. If measurement was successful, the measured results will be displayed, as for example:
MEASURING VALUE = 1.84mm 863 912
FOCUSING RANGE IN MM
7 AutoCal Measuring Sequence: Routine Checks on HS-180 Placement Stations User’s Manual AutoCal Program
7.15 DETERMINE COPLANARITY COORDINATES Software Version 114.xxx
7 - 34

— The measuring range of 1.84mm displayed above is a sample values. The values 863 and 912 rep-
resent the highest and lowest measured values of the laser focus, in counts.
NOTE
➤ The following is to be checked: The value of the measuring range must be at least 1.5 mm.
➤ The measurement will always be continued automatically, however, in the case of an error this
measuring routine is subsequently to be repeated, starting from the main menu.
➤ If the value of 1.5 mm is still not reached when the measurement is repeated,
consult the SMD Service of Siemens AG.
10. The X and Y-coordinates are determined. When so doing, the outer edge of the calibration nozzle is
determined and the center of the laser focus in X and Y-directions is calculated therefrom.
• During this measuring process, the figures "> 0" and " -1" are continuously displayed on the screen:
— Figure -1 = laser beam is outside of calibration nozzle area = edge found = O.K.
— Figure ≥ 0 = laser beam is on laser calibration nozzle
• The measurement is performed repeatedly (7x in all), with the newly calculated center being used as
starting point for the next measurement.
• After each measurement the X and Y-coordinates of the laser focus are displayed in mm, referred to
the reference point.
➤ If an error occurs during the measuring procedure, the following screen display appears:
TOLERANCE OF DEVIATION IN X OR Y DIRECTION TOO LARGE
PRESS <RETURN>
• Acknowledge this message with "RETURN". The screen display shown under point 14 appears.
➤ If you do not wish to repeat the calibration, proceed as described under step 19.
➤ If the measurement is to be repeated, simply press the "END" button on the teach panel and restart
calibration from the main menu (see procedure above).
11. If the measurement is satisfactory the following screen display appears, as for example:
LASER CALIBRATION
FOCUSING RANGE IN MM 1.84 863 912
X-,Y-COORDINATES OF LASER FOCUS 373.64 3.31
X-,Y-COORDINATES OF LASER FOCUS 373.65 3.32
etc.
’TEACH’ PLACEMENT HEAD OVER COMPONENT CAMERA
PRESS THE END-KEY ON THE TEACH PANEL
12. Teach the placement head with the laser calibration nozzle installed so that it is centered above component
camera and press the "END" button on the teach panel. Thus the relationship between the laser focus
and the upper edge of the conveyor belt (head height) is established.
13. The following screen display appears:
OLD LASER COORDINATES (X,Y,Z) 373.66 8.64 9.13
NEW LASER COORDINATES (X,Y,Z) 373.64 8.63 9.12
• The new coplan. data are automatically transferred to the main memory.
