2.9 Basic Safety Precautions
When used properly, the FlexTRAK-2MB System provides safe and reliable service. The purpose of this
advisory is to point out possible hazards that may be encountered during operation, maintenance, and
servicing of your system.
WARNING!
Only qualified personnel should perform equipment installation, setup,
maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
2.9.1 Electrical Hazards
WARNING!
Always disconnect the equipment from the power source and attach a lockout
device to the electrical disconnect before performing any maintenance or repair.
2.9.2

Mechanical Hazards
CAUTION!
Make sure both the in-feed and out-feed conveyor openings are covered prior to
operation of the system. When the FlexTRAK-2MB system is in line with other
machines, the conveyor openings are covered by those machines. However, if the
FlexTRAK-2MB is used as a stand-alone system, it is the system owner’s
responsibility to cover the conveyor openings to protect against injury to
personnel. Contact Technical Support to ask about optional conveyor covers.

Thermal Hazards
CAUTION!
The reaction chamber, vacuum pump, and RF tuning network can become very
hot during system operation. If working near or around these areas, use
appropriate personal protective equipment to prevent burns.

Environmental Hazards
2.9.4.1 Hazardous Waste
CAUTION!
Liquid wastes (e.g., sodium hydroxide, isopropyl alcohol) and solid wastes (e.g.,
electronic parts, chamber deposits, and dirty rags) generated during system
maintenance and servicing should be considered hazardous waste. Consult with
your facility safety officer and the manufacturer’s Material Safety Data Sheet for
instructions concerning proper disposal of hazardous materials. Contact
Technical Support if you have any questions.

2.9.4.2 Process Exhaust
CAUTION!
Exhaust discharge hazards are dependent upon the process gas(es) used and the
material(s) being treated. The chemistry of exhaust discharges should be
evaluated for potential hazards by trained safety/environmental engineers prior to
system start-up. Contact Technical Support if you have any questions.
2.9.4.3 Smoke from Electrical Fault
CAUTION!
Smoke generated by electrical faults inside the FlexTRAK system will be
exhausted into the surrounding area. Personnel should avoid inhaling the smoke
because it contains hazardous substances.
The chemistry of the smoke should be evaluated by trained safety/environmental
engineers for potential hazards prior to system start-up. Contact Technical
Support if you have any questions.
2.9.4.4 Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
CAUTION!
Electrostatic discharge can damage or destroy semiconductors and other circuit
components. Use ESD preventive measures such as grounding wrist straps
whenever working near ESD-sensitive components.

2.10 Safety Features
The FlexTRAK-2MB system is designed with several integrated safety features to protect against
personal injury and equipment damage. These features include the emergency shut off button, residual
current device, and the safety interlocks.
2.10.1 Emergency Machine Off Button
The FlexTRAK-2MB system is equipped with a large, clearly marked, front console-mounted Emergency
Machine Off (EMO) switch. An additional EMO button is located at the rear of the machine. When
activated, the main power connection to the system is disconnected via a momentary action switch that
sets the main power relay to the OFF state and stops operation. This operation can be used during auto,
manual and bypass modes (Figure 2-5).
?
NOTE Using the EMO button will completely turn off power to the FlexTRAK plasma module.
Both the system and the computer will have to be restarted. The only connection that
remains intact is the ON button which, after the EMO is reset, restores full power to the
system through a 24-volt, step-down transformer.
WARNING!
Cutting power to the computer without properly shutting down the operating
system may cause problems with the hard drive and operating system. The EMO
button should only be used in an emergency or after the computer has been
properly shutdown.
2.10.2

Emergency Stop Button
In addition to the EMO buttons, the system is equipped with an E-Stop button. In an emergency, push the
yellow E-Stop button on the front door to stop the motion related to the FlexTRAK plasma module, as
well as the motion of the 2MB Material Handler. This operation can be used during auto, manual and
bypass modes (Figure 2-5).
?
NOTE Using the E-Stop button does NOT completely turn off power to the FlexTRAK-2MB
system. The system still has power to all components. Only the motion is completely
stopped. If an E-Stop is performed while plasma is on, the plasma process will continue,
however the operation of the chamber lid will not work.
CAUTION!
The E-Stop button should only be used in an emergency. Exercise caution if
entry into the machine is required after an E-Stop. Be sure to check the machine
for obstructions left inside after entry.
