3.2 Desktop User Interface
The line computer application programs are started from the desktop and their main and sub-windows are
opened on the user interface. In addition, all messages (alarm, error and malfunction messages etc.) concerning
your work on the line computer are displayed as windows (dialog boxes) on the user interface and must be
confirmed (closed) by clicking on the OK button.
3.2.1 Desktop Menu Bar
In the programming mode, the menu bar contains three menus, in the control mode five menus.
The structure and functions of the "FILE", "OPTIONS" and "SERVICES" menus are identical in both operating
modes.
With the aid of the additional menus "PRODUCT" and "PRODUCTION TOOLS" provided in the control mode,
also those applications can be started that are represented in the programming mode as icons on the desktop
in the main groups "Product" and "Production tools".
3.2.1.1 FILE Menu
- Data Manager
Serves to open the user interface of the Data Manager. The user interface of the Data Manager is
designed for the manipulation of the files and file structures (e.g. copying, moving, etc.) in the LC
system and is able to serve several data partners. The Data Manager executes the commands that
are activated on the user interface.
● Click on FILE --> Data Manager.
The user interface of the Data Manager is opened (see chapt. 4).
- File contents
This can be used to display the file content of a selected file in a window.
● Click on FILE --> File contents.
The FSB for the selection of the path (directory) containing the desired file is opened.
● Successively select the directory/directories and the file by double-clicking.
The user interface of the file display is opened (see chapt. 4).

3.2.1.2 OPTIONS Menu
- Clock on/off
If the menu option Clock on is selected, a clock displaying the current time appears on the desktop.
(As the Clock option obtains the current time from the computer’s internal clock, the latter must be set
correctly).
● Click on OPTIONS --> Clock on/off.
A clock displaying the current time appears on the desktop.
To deactivate the clock:
● Click on OPTIONS --> Clock on/off.
The clock is no longer displayed.
- Pocket calculator on/off
When selecting Pocket calculator on a scientific calculator is displayed on the screen. It is operated
by using the mouse.
● Click on OPTIONS --> Pocket calculator on/off.
A calculator is displayed on the desktop.
To deactivate the calculator:
● Click on OPTIONS --> Pocket calculator on/off.
The calculator is no longer displayed.
- Generate Hardcopy
When this function is selected, a hardcopy of the current window is output on a connected printer.
● Click on OPTIONS --> Generate hardcopy.
The mouse cursor appears in the shape of a cross (+).
● Click on window of which a printout is to be obtained.
A signal sounding twice announces the generation of the screen printout. Shortly thereafter,
a printout of the selected window is output on the printer.

- Settings
This menu item combines the menu options "Select language", "Change time zones" and "Change operating
mode". This option allows the settings selected upon the installation of the LC software to be changed later
on (see chapt. 1, section 1.2.3).
- Change language
This menu option can be used to switch to a different language of the LC user interface.
● Click on OPTIONS --> Settings --> Change language.
The UNIX window "Language-Configuration" opens.
The four languages listed below are available:
1) D German
2) F French
3) GB English
4) I Italian
● At the cursor position, enter the number (1 through 4) that corresponds to the desired language,
or abort the procedure by entering the number 5.
● Press the RETURN key.
● When the information "To activate the new setting you have to restart the Line Computer Unix
please press return" is displayed, press the RETURN key once again.The UNIX window closes.
● Open the main menu (see chapt. 2, page 2 - 18) and terminate the line computer session using
the LC-End menu option.
● On the main menu, restart the line computer session using the LC-Start menu option.
After the start, the LC user interface is displayed in the language selected.
- Change time zones
This menu option can be used to adapt the time setting of the internal clock of the line computer to the
current time zone. Twelve different time zones can be selected from.
● Click on OPTIONS --> Settings --> Change time zones.
The UNIX window "Timezone-Configuration" opens.
● Enter the root password at the cursor position and then press the RETURN key.
The window contains a listing of all time zones that can be selected. Every time zone is identified
by a number.
● At the cursor position, enter the number (1 through 12) that corresponds to the desired time zone,
or abort the procedure by entering the number 13.
● Press the RETURN key.
The UNIX window closes.
The internal clock of the line computer is set to the current time of the selected time zone.
- Change operating mode
This menu option can be used to change the user mode of the LC user interface (see section 3.1.1).
The following operating modes can be selected from:
1) Programming programming mode
2) Controlling control mode
