1.3 Starting Automatic Operation
1.3.1 Selecting a Production Program
There are two fields in the machine memory where the production programs are stored:
foreground and background. A program must be in the foreground to be used for
assembly. Up to nine spare programs can be stored in the background. You can select
the production program to be used in production by carrying out the following
procedure or transmit straight from the host to the machine foreground (refer to your
host documentation for details of this procedure).
Procedure
1. With the machine booted up and the desired program already transmitted to the
machine background, press [PROGRAM]. The [PROGRAM] screen displays, showing
a list of all the programs currently held at the machine.
2. Press [CHANGE]. The message "Program number?" displays in the second status
area.
3. Input the desired program number using numerical keypad. The selected program
replaces the former foreground program.
1.3.2 Modes of Running the Machine
The machine has settings which allow the user to set how the machine runs. These
settings are divided into Operation modes, Production modes and Pass mode.
Operation Modes
Automatic Operation: The machine operates continuously without stopping between
each sequence. Under the following conditions, the machine will stop and exit automatic
operation.
1) The CYCLE STOP button has been pressed.
2) The scheduled production quantity has been completed.
3) When the last sequence is finished during "S Stop", "D Stop" or "Clear Off" operation.
4) There are no parts, or an error has occurred in automatic recovery mode.
5) There are no parts, or an error has occurred in placing (error stop mode).
6) The nozzle statistical processing function is being used, and the number of nozzles
that have been skipped has reached the limit set in Proper Data.
7) Large parts are not being picked (only those parts specified as large parts in Part
Data).
8) An abnormal machine movement has occurred.
9) An emergency stop occurred.
10) Data calculations necessary for placing parts did not finish in time.
11) Vision processing did not finish in time.
Command Pass: [AUTO] - START
Step Operation: The machine operates one sequence at a time. After every sequence, the
message "Press START" appears. After the last sequence the board is removed from the
XY-table and the message "Press START" appears. When there is no board on the XY-
table, a board is loaded, and after one sequence, the message "Press START" appears. In
all other aspects the machine operates as if it were in automatic operation mode.

Production Modes
Product: This mode is used for producing boards. Parts are picked up, parts inspection
is performed and the parts are placed on the boards.
Simulate: This mode is used for such purposes as verifying placing coordinates. Parts
are not picked up. The XY-table and the device tables operate as they do during
production.
Idle: This mode is used for such purposes as machine adjustment, testing or machine
warm-up. Continuous operation is performed without changing the board or
performing vision processing. The placing heads descend at stations 1 and 11. The
carrier operation is not performed. When using this mode, the feeders should be
removed from the device tables.
Idle 2: This mode is also used for such purposes as machine adjustment, testing or
machine warm-up. In addition to the Idle operation, the carrier operation is performed.
When using this mode, the feeders should be removed from the device tables.
Command Pass: [AUTO] or [STEP] - [MODE] - Select [PRODUCT], [SIMULATE], [IDLE]
or [IDLE 2]
Pass: This mode is used when the machine is not used in current production. The
machine simply acts as a board conveyor, moving the board on to the next machine in
the line.
Pass Mode
The two ways of carrying out Pass mode are described below.
• Set Production_mode in the program to Pass.
• Select the command sequence [SET] – [STATUS] – [PASS].
If Pass mode was set in Production_mode in the program then the message “Pass” will
display in yellow at the machine. If Pass mode was set using the command keys at the
machine then the message "Pass" will display in blue (at the machine).
1.3.3 Setting the Device Table Mode
On the machine there are three device table modes: joint mode, device change mode and
changeover mode. An explanation of each mode follows.
Joint Mode
Tables 1 and 2 move synchronously as one large table capable of handling up to 140
devices.
This mode is used in programs with a large number of parts.
The device table from which parts are being picked is referred to as the "production
table" while the table from which parts are not being picked is called the "follow-up
table".

Device Change Mode
Tables 1 and 2 are used separately. A maximum of 70 devices is possible on each table.
Either table 1 or 2 can be used, and the table not in use is referred to as the spare table.
This mode can be used to eliminate down time on the production line.
Changeover Mode
Tables 1 and 2 are used separately. A maximum of 70 devices is possible on each table.
Either table 1 or 2 can be used and the other table can be prepared for use with the next
production program.
When the program is changed the next device table moves to its part picking position.
The table used until now moves to its resupply position.
This is useful for when the operator has many small production runs.
Command Pass: [SET] - [STATUS] - [T MODE] - [CHANGE]
Note: For Device Change and Changeover modes, press [TABLE1] or [TABLE 2] to select the
production table.
1.3.4 Parts Error Handling
When a part cannot be picked, or when a part is judged to be defective, the same type of
part is picked again at the next opportunity. This is called recovery. Recovery mode can
be set in host computer status data or at the machine by pressing [SET], [STATUS],
[RECOVERY] and [CHANGE]. There are three types of recovery modes: auto recovery,
error stop and error pass, each of which are explained below.
Auto Recovery
If a part is rejected during inspection or if the part is not picked, the device number is
recorded in the error recovery counter, and the recovery operation is automatically
carried out. When the error recovery counter exceeds a preset number, the machine
stops. The error recovery counter number can be set either through host computer or by
pressing: [SET], [STATUS], [RECOVERY] and [TIMES].
[Example] If the counter is set at two, the machine will stop when a part at the same
device number is mispicked three times.
